電影《默愛》影評:Francis Lee’s still maboy
默愛影評Ooo sry fellow lezzes, I might have enjoyed this movie more than I should. To my untrained eye, Kate deserves a f*cking Oscar. The reticent, unfeeling, capable woman, who r either naturally asocial, or formed a shell as a coping mechanism in the cruel world that it is for a working-class, single, older woman, to protect her & her sensitive heart. it seems like no one could ever know her, but actually, no one took the time to do the work, like discovering fossil from ugly-lookin’ rocks u know?
the movie start to get good for me from the coal-fetching scene. from then on i start to notice the meticulous, lovely details that was Francis Lee’s trademark that i adore, not to mention the beautiful set design. the only time (well, 2 times) Francis Lee’s camera lost its magic was of course the sex scenes, which were ACTUALLY cringy to watch & no better than the infamous Kechichesque, voyeuristic lens. besides, lesbians aren’t female versions of gay boys. i won’t go into the specifics. the 2nd one was emotionally confusing. i was all cringe zero sad while dropped a tear at the simple lines of ‘its warm. last yr at this time we had snow n now its nice’.
besides this tiny complaint, & lets be honnest everybody botches the lesbian sex scene except Céline, i quite enjoyed the film. Francis Lee’s still my boy. despite the great misfortune of being (at least on the surface) similar to the greatest lesbian cinema of all time (according to me) and coming out later, he still offered something new to the cinematic landscape and uniquely him. so bravo
